Shinas Estate 'The Guilty' Shiraz

"Ripe shiny blackberry red. Voluptuous cherry, vanilla and peppery spice aromas and full-bodied flavours packed with smoky vanillin oak, cherry and strawberry fruits, chocolate and mocha all wrapped up in a big, rich, velvety smooth package. A juicy wine with fine tannins, the pepper detected on the nose kicks in again to make a welcome re-appearance on the powerful finish. Made from low yielding old vines dating back to 1898 and aged in older French oak, the fruit is sourced from Mildura on the north west Victorian border." -Winery Website

The result is a smooth easy drinking red with vibrant red berry aromas that complement the spicy notes which are apparent on the palate. The minimal use of French Oak gives the wine complexity and an elegant toastiness that integrates well with the juicy forest fruits characters." -Winemaker's Notes

  • Killibinbin Langhorne Creek Red Blend -- "The 2006 Cabernet (48%) - Shiraz (52%) is medium crimson in color with a bouquet of cedar, tar, black currant, and blueberry. Ripe, forward, and full-flavored, this appealing wine is ready for prime-time drinking." -Wine Advocate   "Dark and juicy, with a strong green olive tone running through the licorice-infused black fruit flavors. Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. 2,500 cases made." -Wine Spectator

  • Longhop Raw Power Shiraz -- Inky purple. Deeply pitched aromas of blackberry, blueberry and candied cherry. Lush, gently sweet dark fruit flavors are round and uncomplicated, showing no rough edges. Delivers a lot of rich fruit for the price, plus good finishing breadth and lingering smokiness. This is a steal.

  • Misfits Wine Company Brujeria -- "The 2007 Brujera is a blend of 66% Shiraz, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the balance Grenache and Tempranillo. Dark ruby-colored, it emits an attractive aromatic array of spice box, violets, black cherry, and blueberry. Smooth-textured, ripe, and elegant on the palate, this forward, savory wine will evolve for another 1-2 years but can be enjoyed now." -Wine Advocate "Medium-weight, with crisp texture to support the ripe cherry and delicate herbal flavors, lingering well. Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Tempranillo. 1,800 cases made." -Wine Spectator

  • Piping Shrike Shiraz -- Another perennial Best Buy, the 2008 Piping Shrike Shiraz continues the tradition. Made at the excellent Charles Cimicky winery, it was aged for 14 months in a mix of French and American oak with 35% of the latter new. It offers up a fragrant nose of smoke, bacon, and blueberry leading to a supple, smooth-textured sweetly-fruited, easy-going wine that could use a bit more depth. Drink this crowd-pleaser over the next 4-5 years. -Jay Miller, Wine Advocate Cheese Pairing: Parmesan, Pecorino Romano Food Pairing: Roasted Lamb, Grilled Tuna

  • Tait The Ball Buster Proprietary Red -- "The Ball Buster blend has been an annual Best Buy and, even at the current asking price, the 2007 The Ball Buster is an awesome value (at least for hedonists). It is composed of 72% Shiraz, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 11% Merlot aged for 12 months in seasoned French and American oak. Opaque purple-colored, it has a nose of cedar, leather, spice box, and blueberry that leaps from the glass. This is followed by a plush, full-bodied wine with gobs of flavor and superior length. This easy-to-understand effort defines the meaning of over-delivering and will do so for another four years." - Jay Miller, The Wine AdvocateCheese Pairings:  Gouda, Parmesan, PecorinoFood Pairings:  Grilled Flat Iron Steak with Mushroom Ragout, Barbecue Spareribs, Roasted Lamb Shanks

  • Torbreck Woodcutter's Shiraz Barossa Valley -- "Inky purple. Intense cassis and blueberry on the nose, with building spiciness and a sexy floral quality. Richer than usual for this bottling, offering sweet black and blue fruit flavors and solid tannins. Rich but not overly heavy, finishing with very good breadth and juicy persistence. This includes lots of fruit that is normally destined for Torbreck's flagship Run Rig, as that wine wasn't made in 2008." -Stephen Tanzer "This is the kind of red I liked to drink witha  hearty meal after a hard day's waork in the wood, but you don't have to be a wood-cutter to enjoy it." -Winemaker's Notes

  • Wine Men of Gotham Shiraz -- The nose is heady with loads of superb rich chocolate and savoury notes. The palate is rich and defined with rich flavours and great mouth feel. The palate progresses from Chocolate, plums, spice, and toasty oak then to an elegant tannic finish. Lingering on for minutes.   2008 was a great year for ripening and the fruit was picked (in all regions) and in the winery before the heatwave in March. The Fleurieu Peninsula and the Langhorne Creek fruit bring a superb savouriness and the McLaren Vale fruit adds a stunning richness of flavours. Great balance.   Pairs perfectly with beef.
